On Contradictions

On Contradictions

There is nothing we can imagine, however absurd or incredible,

that has not been maintained by one philosopher or another.[1]

Descartes

Hegel’s dialectic contradictions are absurd, incredible, ‘grotesque in shape and gaudy in colour, bizarre and motley (Chinese saying)’.

A Chinese hawker selling both spears and shields boasts to buyers of spears that his spears can pierce through any shield, and to buyers of shields that no spear can pierce his shields.  Some buyer asks, ‘What will happen if one throw your spears at your shield?’  Can your spear pierce through your shield or not?’

The Chinese term for ‘contradiction’ is ‘maodun’ (spear-shield).  The spear and shield hawker contradicts himself.  His boast ‘My spears can pierce any shields and no spears can pierce my shields,’ is a contradiction.  What he says is unreasonable, incredible, illogical, unimaginable, and cannot be true.

There is no contradiction in the universe.
